• Panama is the only port of the world with two oceans. Only 80 kilometers separate the Atlantic from the Pacific across the Isthmus.
  Because of the Canal, Panama recognizes its value and significance as a link in the chain of global trade.
• Panama´s connectivity has been enhanced by ports at both oceans, an air transportation hub with connections to more than 30 destinations in 20 countries of the Continent, an interoceanic railroad, a telecommunications network with the latest technology, and a financial and commercial services center of international quality.
• According to the UNCTAD, Panama is the Latin American country with the greatest connectivity.
• Panama connects all parts of the world. The Panama Canal serves more than 144 maritime routes connecting 160 countries and reaching some 1,700 ports in the world.
• The Canal handles approximately 5% of world trade. More than 70% of the cargo that goes through the Canal originates or is destined for the United States.
• The Panama Canal connects the world by saving time, distance and costs in transporting merchandise between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, and these advantages will grow further with the expansion. To transport cargo of one 10,000 TEU ship by train, truck or plane, you would need the following: 18 trains, 5,800 trucks or 570 planes.
• The expansion will help maximize Panama’s strategic, geographic location by enabling it to become an international maritime hub at the center of global trade.
• The Panama Canal Expansion will enhance the country´s connectivity by allowing the passage of ships with more cargo carrying capacity, which will impact economies of scale and will make of this waterway a game-changer in the international maritime trade.
• The expanded route will modify trade patterns in the region with the Canal as a driving force for global trade. And, as a result of its strengthened connectivity and together with the services offered by the route, Panama will consolidate its role as the most important logistics and transportation center in the Americas.
